Welcome to the website for the Affiliated Lawyers of the Americas (“ALTA”). ALTA is a non-profit trade association incorporated by a group of lawyers in 2010 to foster the professional and business growth of its members and the clients they serve. ALTA’s members, many of whom are of spanish-speaking descent and/or persons of color, are bound together by their common interest in assisting the growth of business in the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. ALTA is beginning to forge a significant presence in the legal and business communities in these areas through collaborations and partnerships between and among members, and through alliances with major regional, national and international interests. Its continued expansion and growth will continue to provide myriad opportunities for its members, affiliates, and partners.

Michael Rivera, Esq., Downey, California - President

Michael A. Rivera was born in New York City and raised in the Bronx, New York. He attended Columbia College of Columbia University in New York and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1985. He then graduated from the U.C.L.A. School of Law in Los Angeles, California with a Juris Doctor degree in 1988. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in December of 1988. During law school, Michael Rivera performed volunteer legal services at El Centro Legal de Santa Monica, a free legal clinic. Thereafter, and during the last 24 years, Attorney Michael Rivera has served the Southern California community, helping families and small businesses protect their rights and financial well being in the State and Federal courts and by the use of business structures and individualized estate planning. Michael Rivera is a member of the Bars of the State of California, the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Central and Southern Districts of California, and President Elect of the Affiliated Lawyers of the Americas. Norma Ortiz, Esq., Brooklyn, New York - Vice President

NORMA E. ORTIZ, a founding partner in the firm of Ortiz & Ortiz, L.L.P., has been a member of the bar since 1988. She represents debtors and creditors in a wide variety of individual and business bankruptcy cases. Norma has represented both debtors, creditors, and rent receivers in Chapter 11, 7,and 13 cases, and has a diverse bankruptcy practice. She also regularly represents clients in non-bankruptcy matters that arise, both in an out of court, from financial difficulties and disputes, such as debt negotiation, loan workouts, and home loan modifications. Before forming her firm in 1998, Norma served as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the U.S. Trustee, and as a law clerk to the Honorable Arthur J. Gonzalez, former Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. She has provided continuing legal education courses on bankruptcy issues for the Bar Association for City of New York, the Hispanic National Bar Association, the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the Practicing Law Institute. Norma formerly served as the Chair of the Bankruptcy Committee for the New York State Bar Association, as a member of the Executive Committee of the N.Y.S.B.A.’s Business Law Section, and as a member of the Board of the Puerto Rican Bar Association. She presently serves as Vice-President of the Affiliated Lawyers of the Americas (“ALTA”). Norma is a 1987 graduate of New York University School of Law and a graduate of the City College of New York. Norma practices law with her father, Frank Ortiz, and resides in Manhattan and New Paltz, New York, with her husband and two children.

Jose G. Rivera Feliciano - White Plains, New York - Secretary

Jose is excited to be joining the ALTA team. A recent graduate of New York Law School, Jose particularly enjoyed studying real estate and intellectual property. Jose has worked closely with ALTA in its recent endeavors, and helped coordinate this year’s conference in California. He is currently employed at the law office of Jose Luis Torres, Esq. Raised in Puerto Rico, but a 7 year New Yorker, Jose is excited to start his legal career in the City, and is thrilled to join the Executive Committee as Secretary.

Alex Hart, CPA, Mount Kisco, New York - Treasurer

Alexander J. Hart is a principal and founder of Hart Vida Raffo. With over 25 years of experience, Alex specializes in the areas of tax strategy and planning, business process improvement, and capital consulting. Whether advising on capital and financing strategy or consulting for privately-held professional services firms, Alex has the expertise and practical know-how to help any company optimize their business processes and make tactical financial decisions. He began his career at IBM in sales operations and accounting. He was a Controller for the N.Y. Post, has been a CFO for a medical device company, and has written a tax column called “Ask the Tax Guys” for Micro-Cap Review. Alex is a professional member, treasurer, and executive committee member of A.L.T.A. (Affiliated Lawyers of the Americas). He is also a member of the National Association of Tax Preparers, and is a contributing author and mentor at Latin Business Today. Alex graduated from St. John’s University with a B.A. in Spanish and his M.B.A. in Finance. He obtained his accounting degree from Pace University.



A Dinner Meeting was held with Guests of Honor, Attorney Migdalia Velasquez, President of the Cuban Bar Association, Attorney & Professor Yamila Gonzalez Ferrer, a Law Professor at the University of Havana Law School, and Manuel Vasquez Seijido, Legal Counsel, National Institute of Sex Education, Cuba. Also in attendance were distinguished professionals, Hon. Walter Rivera, Past President of ALTA; Bill Ferreira, Esq., General Counsel of ALTA and member of the ABA Board of Governors; Hon. Miguel de la Carreras, Judge of the Superior Court, Passaic County, State of New Jersey; Neysa Alsina, Esq., HNBA Regional President; Tony Martinez, Esq.; Miguel Santiago, Esq.; Arnaldo Salinas, Archangel Security; Dr. Martello, Delta Security; Victor Medina, Delta Security, Susan Chase, Esq., Legal Aid Society; Kevin Howell, Anchor Strategy, and Bradley L. Gerstman, Esq., Founding Partner, Gerstman Schwartz & Malito, LLP. The general topic was how to set up a line of communication between ALTA and their bar association to be followed by a listing of international conferences that ALTA members can attend sponsored by their bar association. There were many one on one exchanges. Some of the guests in attendance have visited Cuba and met with Yamila Gonzalez Ferrer, a Law Professor and the Secretary of their association, on such prior visits. ALTA is planning to organize a trip to Cuba to attend one of their international legal and business conferences. Those interested in participating in the organizational effort should reach out to one of the ALTA executive committee members.
